How to Research a Company for Job Search
Great article on sources of information about prospective employers, including company websites, social media accounts (LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, other feeds), Glassdoor, and a few others.
I would add:
- their industry associations
- local and regional business associations
- best-of lists, industry awards
- their vendors/suppliers
- BBB listing
- Yelp reviews
What other sources can you suggest to qualify a prospective employer?

I also recommend
1. Looking at the Statutory Accounts especially the Directors Report which discusses future strategy
2. Tying out the product/service
3. Call the company and ask for sales literature, technical information and product brochures
4. Look out for blogs by Googling “blog Nestleâ€, for example
5. Read industry and trade magazines
6. The websites “The Job Crowd” and “Target Jobs” in the UK
Former employees, ex-consultants, business advisers, etc. can be productive resources. Be sure to filter against other information and watch out for negative biases.
Debra, that’s a great point. I used to think past employees had no incentive to mislead about their experience with a given company, but that breaks down when you consider it. So yes, beware biases!
